Save Dessert for Later
I can’t believe I said that, but I mean it.
I had today’s post all kind of figured out in my head. You guys were going to learn all about the joys of Banoffee, one of my favorite desserts ever.
Then I came home (half day today) and watched Life in a Day on Netflix.
Have you ever seen a movie that really got to you? Because this one totally got to me. It’s basically a bunch of clips sent in from all over the world, of people filming their life on July 24, 2010. Ok, I thought…big deal, right? A look into people’s lives. But you guys – it’s so nuts.
The movie itself was good. It asked three questions: What do you love, what do you fear, and what is in your pocket. Then everyone on the planet answers them. We’re all so different. I mean, we’re all exactly the same – we love our family, we’re scared of spiders, blah blah blah. But SO MUCH STUFF is happening every day. No matter where you are on the planet, someone else is doing exactly what you’re doing, and someone else is doing something you’ll never do in your life. Someone is kissing their baby, and someone else is slitting a goat’s throat. Someone is falling asleep, and someone is waking up to gunfire. Someone is grumbling about having to go to work, and someone can’t get a job because who would look after his motherless children?
This was all very eye-opening and all, but at the end of the day, we’re human and what we think is how am I involved in all of this?
For me it was an easy, but terrifying answer.
What I love and what I fear are exactly the same thing.
There is nothing on the planet that I love more than my family. Nothing. No $5000 boots, no winning lottery tickets, no fulfilling career, it’s THEM. And there is nothing that scares me more than losing them. I think part of what kept me carefree and single for so long was the avoidance of these exact bonds. It’s easy to be fearless when you’re solo. But now I know fear – TRUE fear. Because I couldn’t wake up if it wasn’t for them.
I don’t give a shit about what’s in my pocket, because I know what’s in my heart.
I’ll have to check out that movie! Good post!
Thanks! The movie is definitely worth a watch!
I’m a husband and father of three, and couldn’t agree more. What happens if I lose my job? It sucks, but I still have them. If I were to lose my house? I still have them. Money can be made. Belongings can be acquired/replaced. But the woman and three kids that occasionally drive me batty can’t. Well done.
Exactly! I mean, lottery wins and dream careers would make life easier, but I can live without them. Take away my family, and I can’t imagine being able to breathe.
Thanks for reading and commenting – your wife and kids are lucky to have someone who appreciates them!
thumbs up!!! keep the love and spirit up, family guys and gals!! i share similar sentiments of being single, having freedom without purpose, like no place to return home to. never been this happy before — having a loving family is great, like having a warm home to return to each day. home is in my heart now, no need to look elsewhere 🙂
I love that thought. I’ve never given much thought to the actual meaning of “home is where the heart is,” but I GET it now!
My fav quote of the entire blog: I don’t give a shit about what’s in my pocket, because I know what’s in my heart.” Made for a very nice wrap up!! Thank you!! Now… I need to get my hands on this movie 🙂
Thank you! And go now! The movie is totally worth a watch!
Agreed, love that line. I’m also pretty sure you now deserve partial royalties for the amount of people going to watch this movie now! 🙂
Oooooo!!! I like the way you think! I should get in touch with National Geographic and let them know…

Thank you! As crazy as our families can be sometimes, they’re OURS!
I’ve seen this done in a book and it was great. I’m now looking forward to the film. Thank you for your post and reflection.
The correct answer to what’s the most important in your life is this – relationships.
You made me feel good and this struck a chord….You or in fact most of us living in this world are ‘insecure’ because we fear losing the people we love. Relationships and love guide our lives and it won’t be the same if we don’t have these people who matter the most…Thanks for writing 🙂
You have empowered me!
Wow! Thank you!
I just got Netflix so I willl have to check that movie/documentary out! =]
Do it! Do it! It’s great!
“I don’t give a shit about what’s in my pocket, because I know what’s in my heart” I totally agree with you!
Thank you – we’re VERY smart!
Sweetest. Post. Ever.
Thank you, amen.
Sweetest. Comment. Ever. Thanks!!!
I was so thrilled this morning to see the sweetest and truest post ever, freshly pressed! It could not have happened to a more deserving blogger!
Thank you so much!!! It was such a surprise!
I totally understand and appreciate this post. My family (like many including yourself) is EXTREMELY important to me. This should lead us to an even deeper reality which is that they are gifts from above. Surely the Giver is even greater than the gifts. Thousands, maybe even millions around the world have this same thought that “I couldn’t wake up if t wasn’t for them” and one day, unfortunately, they do lose one or even all that they loved, only to find out that they do learn to pick up the pieces and move on. One of our church members, for example, just recently lost his wife, daughter and mother all in one split second in a horrific accident. Our families are gifts to be cherished and loved but if they become the very reason we live they can in fact take on the nature of “an idol”. Not implying you meant that. The love you have for your family is inspiring and worthy of being freshly pressed. Just sharing a few thoughts. Congratulations on getting freshly pressed. I especially enjoyed the “attention grabbing title” that lured me to check out the post and the photo of you and your family is so sweet! You now have me interested in a movie I otherwise would never have concerned viewing.
Sometimes you gotta stop the world so you can appreciate it again. Glad you took the time to ‘reorient!”, thanks for sharing.
That’s a great way to look at it! Thank you.
Loving your post – have to agree with you that it is what is in your HEART:) Have a Great One!
Thanks – you too!
You are blessed as alot of us are, the only difference is, you know it and many of us never get to that place.
Beautiful post and I love the photo oozing with love 🙂
Congratulations on being Freshly Pressed!
The last paragraph of this post says it all. As much as I told myself I would never have a wife and kids the truth was I simply felt afraid of the responsibility. Now that I have a family I fear losing them.
Understanding the first fear allowed me to open myself up to fatherhood. Understanding the second fear motivates me to be the best husband and father I can be.
