Who’s the Most EVERYTHING of them all?

I wasn’t sure if I was going to use the Daily Prompt today since it related to my last post and y’all know that I like to keep things fresh for you.  That being said, I’m a bit of a sucker for this topic lately, what with being deep in the thralls of breaking all of my resolutions, so here we go:

Look in the mirror. Does the person you see match the person you feel like on the inside? How much stock do you put in appearances?

As always, the answer isn’t as cut and dried as one would expect.  Let’s br-br-break it down, shall we?

First of all, look in the mirror.  Check.  No problem.  Do it all the time, with varying degrees of success.  Now comes the tricky part.  The person you see.  I know what you’re thinking.  “Anita, how is THAT part tricky?  It’s a MIRROR.”  Well, Mr. Smartypants (yes, I know you’re a dude because all the girls know the answer to this already) it’s tricky because I see something different EVERY. TIME.  What I see in the morning is different that what I see when I’m about to leave for work.  Which is different that what I see when I arrive at the office.  Which is different that what I see when I get home.  It can be different before and after listening to a song.  It’s different if I’m in a good mood, and you can bet your balls it’s different just before I’m about to get my (cover your eyes, boys, I’m about to say the word) period.  (K – it’s safe again.)

I suppose that means that in many cases, how I feel does match what I see. Possibly because my eyes must have some sort of emotional filter through which they receive their signals.  The times that really mess with me are days when I’m dancing around the house feeling like some smoking hot sex machine, and the mirror sneaks up on me.

This couldn’t be more accurate.

Sometimes, ignorance really is bliss.

Now comes the sad part of our story, gentle readers.  How much stock do I put into appearances.  I would love to tell you a wonderful story about how appearances don’t matter and it’s what’s on the inside that counts and love is blind and then we can all hop onto our unicorns and ride the rainbow into Baconville.  Spoiler alert: I would be lying.  Of COURSE appearances aren’t the most important thing in the world, but they DO matter and sometimes they matter a LOT.  Personally, I’m sure that I put a little bit more stock into appearances than I should, but I make no apologies.  I like pretty things, and I want to be a pretty thing.  Don’t get your panties into a knot, I don’t want to be ONLY a pretty thing.  There is WAY more to me than what you can see.  I’m also a smart thing and a funny thing and a kind thing and most importantly more than just a thing.  But I don’t think there’s anything wrong with striving to have your outsides match your insides.  And my insides are beeeeeeeeeautiful.

What do you see when you look in the mirror?
